He frees me

by Aleza Freeman

Yesterday he danced
his pants off, jumping,
swinging, twirling
in circles of laughter.

If I tried to do that …
I’d probably be arrested for
indecent exposure.

So boisterous
and free. It frees me.

That smile melts me.
Those eyes lift me up.
When he falls, his cry,
guts me like a fish.

I wipe away his tears with
his blue boo boo blankie,
kiss away his blues,
“I love you so much, mommy.”

He’s really reeled me in,
and yet, he sets me free.
